Lovely Crochet-Along: Sidewalk Shawl

So this is the first post on my new blog! So exciting! I won’t officially launch this site until September, {so PUHLEAZE excuse the lack of loveliness around here, and enjoy the progress as I finish constructing this site for your enjoyment} but I really wanted to do this crochet-along with my instagram friends… so here I am, sharing it with my bloggy friends as well. Figured it would just be easier to post all of the details in one place!

So here’s the deal: I found this awesome free pattern on Stitch Nation’s site. It’s called the Sidewalk Shawl. {PATTERN LINK} My daughter found the pattern on a card at Joann’s while shopping and showed it to my mom one day last week. Mommy got totally excited and wanted to make it immediately. She {who calls me the crochet goddess, mostly to puff me up so I will help her in situations like this, I think} begged me for help to find a suitable yarn to use, as our trusty Joann’s has stopped carrying the lovely Stitch Nation yarns. {booooo-hisssss}
So… Sunday afternoon {armed with many coupons, of course} we visited my local {and brand new, might I add} Joann’s to find an affordable replacement. She wanted a soft, yet vegan and washable yarn to use. We found the Red Heart Soft yarn to be amazingly soft and totally affordable. So of course she needed me to help her with starting the pattern, so I, of course, had to buy some yarn and join her in making the shawl {in support and because it is soooo much easier to show someone rather than tell them how to crochet}. I found that Deborah Norville’s Premium chunky yarn was totally perfect for my version. {as you know, or soon will, I can never just follow patterns/recipes/directions without adding my own little twist, so I’ve decided to forgo the fringe and add a sweet decorative edging to my shawl AND use a thicker yarn to make it warmer and less lacy.}
**if this is our first meeting, welcome. I wanted to interject here and say hello if this is the case, and explain that I say “of course”, “soooo” and like to use ” ‘s {‘s and ….’s a LOT. But you will learn about my quirkinesses {is that even a word?} soon enough. But anyways, back to my story…

Yah. So I started to help my mom with the pattern Sunday night, and got the bright idea that I should do this as a crochet-along, hoping a few friends would wanna join me making this cool shawl. I posted about in on instagram and I was right! {yay!} Friends do want to join along!

So do you wanna join in as well? {of course you do!} Here’s how:

1. Hop over to Stitch Nation and grab the pattern.

2. Get some yarn! Worsted weight is what the pattern calls for, but I’m using chunky. Your choice!

3. Snag a crochet hook- size H(5.0mm).

4. If you wanna, you can tag pics or posts about your progress on twitter or instagram with #lovelycrochetalong I am @indielovely on instagram and @theindielovely on twitter if you wanna follow me. I love crafty pics and making new friends, so say hi if you look me up!

5. Grab the image in the right sidebar for your blog/instagram/bedroom wall if you wanna be cool and post it up. Or use it to lure your friends into joining us. I promise it’s not a cult. It is really fun and addictive though. But you don’t have to tell them that if you don’t wanna.

6. Add yourself to this linky thingy…

7. Start hookin! I’ve started mine already, to help my mom and sister with the pattern, and am on row 6. I’m going to put it away until Monday though, because I am going to finish up my Starburst Flower blanket and a hexy bag that I have going first. Also I wanna give you guys time to get supplies and stuffs. I realize not everyone is as hopelessly devoted to crochet as I am. And yes, I am singing that in my best Olivia Newton-John voice. You know… this song from Grease…

Oh, I also need to mention that I am usually singing ridiculously annoying {according to my children and hunny} songs. I also may be doing some obscure interpretive dance moves while singing them. You unfortunately will not be witnessing this, unless of course my children decide to post a video on YouTube. Which I highly doubt will happen, since they just shrivel with embarrassment when I do it in public.

So any-hoo, we will chat soon, right?

OH… and P.S.
you can call me Anne or Annie, I will answer to both. But don’t call me jerkface, as I only answer to it when my sis calls me that after I make her mad by asking random strangers to guess which one of us is the older sister 😉

I am thinking about jumping in on this and starting this weekend. I was thinking about making it as a gift for my friend who will be a Fall bride and might need a shawl. But…I really don’t like the fringe for that and was wondering what type of edging you are planning on? Do you think it would work for a bride? :-)

Anne August 10, 2012 at 9:54 am

I haven’t decided on an edging yet. But def NOT fringe. I think that you could totally find one appropriate for a bridal shawl.

Okay, then I’m going to hit up the yarn shop this weekend and join in on Sunday! YAY!

I am going to do this. I need something to take a break from when making hats, scarves, and blankets. Great idea.

It’s our last opportunity to make ourselves something before we get started making holiday gifts!

Hi! I’ve just stumbled across your blog while perusing the #crochet tag on Tumblr and saw lots of people making this. I’ve only ever tried one CAL before but I’d like to jump on board as well. Happy hooking everyone!
